At the finals of the 2024 Copa América and European Championships, Argentina and Spain were crowned at the top of the Americas and Europe, respectively. This being so, we wondered if they were also the Sustainable Social Progress Champions in their leagues.
Using our Just Transition Score, which measures human progress adjusted by biodiversity, CO2 emissions, and material consumption per capita, we identified that besides its football wonder, Spain is the undisputed World Champion of Sustainable Social Progress.
On the other side of the ocean, Argentina fares better than the average of its league, bettering even European countries on Carbon Efficiency. Still, it lags behind some other countries, including Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Colombia, which rank among the world’s top ten. On the other hand, the United States and Canada rank in the 100s, well below the rest of the Americas.
