People’s Report

The People's Report is a global interactive survey of dreams and realities that amplifies unheard voices to advance on the Sustainable Development Goals and social impact.

People’s Report

COVID-19 hit us hard, but the reality is that the SDGs were already off track long before the pandemic. Our 2021 Social Progress Index reveals that, even in the most optimistic scenario, the Sustainable Development Goals won’t be met until 2082. So, how did people cope during the pandemic, and what can we do to genuinely act and engage with the communities that are at the forefront of social and environmental issues?

The People's Report is an engaging, game-like experience that captures the voices and stories of often underrepresented individuals, revealing their dreams and hopes. With this rich dataset, we aim to drive meaningful conversations and informed decisionmaking to support social impact. This initiative has become one of the largest datasets reflecting global perspectives since the COVID-19 pandemic. With the survey available in 43 languages, over 17,000 people shared their stories, providing valuable insights to support plans for sustainable long-term solutions.

Key Insights

According to the Global Social Progress Index, since 2011, the European Union has improved on social progress while the US has declined. However, this is largely due to the US backslide as opposed to the EU making great strides. As we see, social progress has stalled across Europe with the most significant decreases in Austria (-0.77), Lithuania (-0.62), Spain (-0.49), Slovakia (-0.47) and Croatia (-0.41).

In the UK the social progress has declined by 0.39 points since 2011 and it has fallen 8 places in the ranks since 2011 to 21st in 2023. As in the US, the UK decline is largely driven by declining rights and inclusiveness.

What people are saying...

The bottom-up voices don’t always confirm the top-down plan and how they see the world. In Europe and in North America, more than 1 in 10 respondents go to bed hungry. People speak their reality. It doesn’t always conform with the buckets and the categories that we are so often divided by.

- Michael Green, CEO, Social Progress Imperative

To me, the People’s Report is the start of a journey to fulfilling a long promise. When I used to work with street kids, they always used to say, “Nobody will ever listen to us; we are just the unheard voices.” This is the start of a journey. Every person in the rural parts of the world, the unheard people, is going to be heard.
  • Jeroo Billimoria, Co-founder of Catalyst 2030

We have to do this together. We are an asset. We want to step inside and lean in and say we’ve got the voices of the people and we are social entrepreneurs ready to share our strategies where are most needed. Give us a seat at the table and let us help.
