Key Insights

There has been a stagnation of global social progress in almost every region since 2020, driven by the COVID pandemic and a chronic decline in rights and freedoms.

Today, 2 out of 3 people live in a country where social progress has stagnated or declined.

The G7 and other advanced countries show slower progress, with faster gains coming from emerging economies. Read the full report to explore the vulnerabilities and strengths of each region or explore our interactive tool below.
The Index reveals that GDP is not destiny. At all income levels, some countries are better than others at turning their economic resources into social progress.

For instance, Denmark and the U.S. have similar GDP per capita, but U.S. social progress is 10 points lower. The relationship between economic and social progress has also weakened in the years since COVID, highlighting other factors driving social progress.

The most improved countries since 2011 have raised their social progress scores by over 9 points. Saudi Arabia made the most significant gains with notable improvements in infrastructure and education.

Several countries with the least improvement during this period faced significant state breakdown, such as Syria and Venezuela. More surprisingly, half of the 10 least improved countries are advanced economies: Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

2024 was the biggest election year in history with half the world's population going to the polls.

79% of those voters live in a country with stagnating or declining social progress, and 8 out of 10 of them voted for change. This is notable given the overwhelming majority of these countries have seen an increase in GDP per capita, sending a profound message to elected officials to prioritize social progress together with economic development.

There has been a long-term decline in the world score on rights and freedoms, particularly of the media, impacting countries in almost every region of the world. Only Central Asia & the Caucasus region has a higher score on Rights & Voice in 2024 than in 2011 but it remains the lowest-scoring region. South Asia, which has been one of the better performing emerging regions on these measures, has declined in recent years. The only region that has seen a recovery in scores on Rights & Voice in the last year is Latin America & the Caribbean, driven by a big improvement in Brazil.

Declining rights are also seen in a slump in press freedom around the world, pulling down the world’s score on Information & Communications in recent years.
