The Index weighs 89 indicators at the state level and 49 at the district level. The Index has been adopted by the Indian government and it also enables policymakers, businesses and civil society organizations to make decisions to drive India's social progress.

With the right data tools and strategies, we can improve societal wellbeing. India has become an example of how policy action can lead to progress.

Amit Kapoor, Honorary Chairman of the Institute for Competitiveness, shared at the UN's headquarters that with India's Social Progress Index and the Aspirational District Programme transforming under-developed districts, 27 out of 112 districts improved their social indicators. How did they do it? By understanding the right metrics and taking the necessary policy actions. It's also about looking beyond GDP and uncovering the root causes of these differences.

According to the Global Social Progress Index, since 2011, the European Union has improved on social progress while the US has declined. However, this is largely due to the US backslide as opposed to the EU making great strides. As we see, social progress has stalled across Europe with the most significant decreases in Austria (-0.77), Lithuania (-0.62), Spain (-0.49), Slovakia (-0.47) and Croatia (-0.41).

In the UK the social progress has declined by 0.39 points since 2011 and it has fallen 8 places in the ranks since 2011 to 21st in 2023. As in the US, the UK decline is largely driven by declining rights and inclusiveness.
