Climate Perceptions Index

The Climate Perceptions Index is a comprehensive measure that assesses public perceptions of climate change. Based on data from over 100,000 active Facebook users across 107 countries, this index explores three key dimensions: awareness of climate change, risk perception, and commitment to action.

The Climate Perceptions Index offers in-depth knowledge of the societal implications of climate change. It aims to provide insights for political leaders on where to focus to improve public support for climate action in their country. The index covers 107 countries and 3 additional regional groupings of countries.

Key Insights

According to the Global Social Progress Index, since 2011, the European Union has improved on social progress while the US has declined. However, this is largely due to the US backslide as opposed to the EU making great strides. As we see, social progress has stalled across Europe with the most significant decreases in Austria (-0.77), Lithuania (-0.62), Spain (-0.49), Slovakia (-0.47) and Croatia (-0.41).

In the UK the social progress has declined by 0.39 points since 2011 and it has fallen 8 places in the ranks since 2011 to 21st in 2023. As in the US, the UK decline is largely driven by declining rights and inclusiveness.

Answered questions such as: how much do you know about climate change to how much do you think climate change will harm you personally, the CPI shows that there is no single country that excels in all dimensions and indicators, demonstrating that there is room for improvement and opportunities to adopt best practices from other nations.

Finland leads in Awareness, Malawi ranks highest in Risk Perception, and Chile is the most committed to action. However, Portugal achieves the top overall score in the index. Conversely, Haiti scores lowest in Awareness, Yemen performs the worst in both Risk Perception and Commitment to Action, and ranks lowest overall. Understanding this can help us develop targeted strategies to promote greater commitment to climate action.
