Recent findings from the 2024 Social Progress Index of the Mexican States reveal that public investment, job creation from specific projects, and economic growth can't replace the need for policies focused on advancing social progress. All of these fall short of creating lasting improvements in the quality of life for Mexicans. The latest results of the index reveal what needs to be done to build better and more inclusive opportunities.
In collaboration with Social Progress Imperative and INCAE Business School CLACDS, México, ¿cómo vamos? launched the 2024 Social Progress Index of the Mexican States, consisting of data-based observations compiled from 2015-2023. Encompassing 3 dimensions of social progress, including Basic Human Needs, Foundations of Well-Being, and Opportunities, this tool evaluates the performance of Mexican states through a score from 0 to 100, where scores closer to 0 indicate a low level of social progress, and scores nearing 100 indicating a high level of social progress.
Among the various findings of the Index, the difference in the level of progress among Mexico’s states is of particular concern. While the Index reveals that most of the states of Mexico are witnessing advancements in social progress, the southeastern region of the country is experiencing a comparatively low level of development.
The northern states of Coahuila and Sinaloa have increased their social progress by over 8 points since 2015. In contrast, those located in the southeastern part of the country, such as Veracruz and Morelos, have experienced half the level of social progress since 2015, demonstrating a score change under 4 points.
