Key Insights

The 2026 Global Social Progress Index reveals that the world is at a turning point, where the steady improvement in quality of life of recent decades may be going into reverse.

The cause of the global slowdown is broad based - rights are down nearly 6 points since 2011 and -1.9 points 2021-25; health, safety and environmental quality are all down 2021-25; water and sanitation, housing and access to information all slowed significantly in this period.
The Index shows that 50 countries have declined in social progress, 85 have shown no significant change, and only 36 of 171 countries have improved.

The major trend seems to be the rising tide of authoritarian and populist leadership, which first affected rights and is now flowing into worsening performance across other aspects of social progress.
Given the ongoing decline in rights in many countries, the risk is that global social progress decline will accelerate in the coming years.

The Index reveals that GDP is not destiny. At all income levels, some countries are better than others at turning their economic resources into social progress.

Denmark and the U.S. have similar GDP per capita, but  U.S. social progress is nearly 10 points lower.  The U.S. also has social progress results comparable to Latvia, despite Latvia’s GDP per capita being half that of the U.S.

The United States has slipped 14 places in the rankings since 2011 and has declined in rankings on all 12 components of social progress. Rights, housing, advanced education, inclusiveness, basic education and safety are all down >3 points. The European Union overtook the US in 2019 in the Global Social Progress Index and is now 3 points ahead.
