Why the Social Progress Index Matters

The world is changing. Measuring our progress through the narrow lens of economic growth alone is not equitable or sustainable. Our tools are designed for decision-makers to go beyond GDP to embrace inclusive and sustainable growth aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

Over the last decade, the Social Progress Index has established itself as a premier tool for global leaders to gain insights into the true state of a society.

Its distinctive design focuses on the issues that matter most to people – such as improved health, safety, education, rights and opportunities.

How Do We Achieve This?

Policymakers, business leaders, investors, community groups and philanthropists in over 50 countries are using the Social Progress Index to frame and measure performance, facilitate collaboration and prioritize actions on the world’s most pressing issues.

What People Are Saying...

"We have been saying for a long time that the GDP is a useful tool to assess how EU regions are progressing, but it does not provide the full picture. Economic indicators, social indicators but also indicators on wellbeing, citizen perceptions and trust all have their role to play; the Social Progress Index offers important insights on regional development in Europe. This data can help us to evaluate regional development, helping us to better the lives of all Europeans."

European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms

"The Social Progress Index pushes questions in a different direction, focusing on the whole of development.”

Deputy Secretary General of the UN

"I’m grateful to these groups and many others, including Superhumans Center, The Center for Mind-Body Medicine, Balbek Bureau and the Social Progress Imperative for stepping up, taking action, and making an impact in the region (for Ukraine refugees)."

42nd President of the United States

“It is increasingly evident that a model of human development based on economic progress alone is incomplete. A society which fails to address basic human needs, equip citizens to improve their quality of life, protect the environment, and provide opportunity for many of its citizens is not succeeding. Inclusive growth requires both economic and social progress.”

Harvard Business School

“We cannot really understand how to address issues and have different stakeholders prioritize different aspects of social progress until we first measure things in a way that creates common meaning.”

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

“If we are going to achieve the Global Sustainable Development Goals we have to do things differently. We have to prioritize social progress and really scale solutions around the world. The Social Progress Index was always created to be a practical tool by applying the global index but also building local SPI's for states and cities and regions to really help policymakers in governments and in business make better decisions. Let’s reject business as usual. Let’s demand a different path. Let’s choose the world that we want.”

CEO, Social Progress Imperative

"For a country as large and heterogeneous as India, the insight that [the Social Progress Index] brings to geographical and spatial variations in development is very valuable.”

Chair of the Economic Advisory  Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) of India
