Brazil delivers on inclusive growth

As the fifth-largest country in the world, Brazil’s immense territory is matched by its incredible diversity. But how can a country of this scale continue to progress without leaving anyone behind?

It is no easy task, but the data is lighting the way. We share the latest data insights from the new 2026 Brazil Social Progress Index to learn more about the country and how leaders are turning data into impact.

From the Amazon to every corner in Brazil

Our journey in Brazil began over a decade ago when we launched our very first subnational index in the Amazon. Today, our partner IPS Brasil, has mapped all states and every single one of its 5,570 municipalities. First achieved as an unprecedented milestone in 2024, this hyper-local index allows you to see exactly how social progress is evolving in every community across the country.

The new 2026 Brazil Social Progress Index has more actionable insights than ever before. It features historical data from 2024 to 2026, helping discover where social progress is accelerating and where it needs attention.

Here is our top pick:

  • Brazil is progressing! A subtle improvement from 2025 but enough to celebrate!
  • The states in the Legal Amazon performed worse than the national average across practically all components, especially Environmental Quality. This is mainly due to accumulated deforestation and the concentration of associated Greenhouse Gas emissions.
  • The Health and Well-being component demonstrated weaknesses, especially in the wealthier regions of Brazil, such as the South and Southeast, expressed by high rates of obesity, suicide, and mortality from Non-Communicable Chronic Diseases.
  • Change is possible! Between 2025 and 2026, 754 municipalities moved from the intermediate category to the group of municipalities with better performance. The group of municipalities with the lowest performance saw its number reduced by 500.

A Tool for Impact

Over the last few years, the IPS Brasil team has worked directly with community advocates and government leaders to turn this data into targeted public policy. We recently sat down with Melissa Wilm, Coordinator of IPS Brasil, to discuss how the index has evolved into a decision-making roadmap in Brazil.

We share real stories of change! Listen to the full conversation here.
