Despite recovering from the economic plunge as a result of Covid-19, progress for the United Kingdom has steadily declined since 2011. Falling from 13th to 21st in the 2023 ranking of social progress, the United Kingdom is now lagging behind countries such as Slovenia, Czechia, and Estonia.
This decline seen in the UK is largely attributed to the failure of meeting basic needs. This concerns the social progress indicators of Housing, Water & Sanitation, as well as Health and Basic Education. It is important to note that a majority of the UK's overall decline in the social progress ranking is due to a fall in the Rights & Voice and Inclusive Society components.
The Social Progress Index consists of twelve components to create a data-based, holistic view of a country or region’s social progress. In measuring a country’s performance in various categories, leaders are equipped with the knowledge necessary to direct their attention and resources to the most pressing issues.
We see the impact of the Social Progress Index tool in the London Borough of Brent where local officials are developing data-based strategies to effectively address concerns in areas of education, health, and safety.
